Cat Training

Cat HidingSome people wonder can you really train a cat, they just have a mind of there own. From what I have gathered, yes you can accomplish this but cat training is much different than training your dog and you probably aren't going to want to teach them to sit, come or stay. You are most likely going to want to train your cat for things like how to use the toilet or use a scratch post verus your furniture.

Let's first look at how a cat learns. From what I've gathered cats learn by experience. If they experience something unpleasant, you can be assured that they will avoid whatever happened to them the next time. Cats enjoy raking there claws across the your furniture, so they continue to do that because that was a good experience. But if they do something like touch like their nose to a burning candle you can bet they will not do that again.

So the key to train a cat is to make it rewarding and pleasurable. You have to be careful of rewarding your cat unintentionally for bad behavior. An example is your cat pounces on you at 5 am in the morning, meowing like crazy. What do you do, you get up and feed him. This is teaching your kitty that this behavior got him exactly what he wanted.
