Dog Bone, Muscle and Joint Disorders

Endurance and agility are important attributes of the natural hunter, and a dog's body is built to enhance these characteristics. The front legs are attached to the rest of the body by muscles, and there is no collarbone, which gives maximum flexibility.

The hind legs have massive muscles to power instant acceleration and to maintain speed. All this superb equipment is susceptible to injury and damage by misuse, especially in breeds whose bone structure has been much altered through selective breeding. Lameness is a common problem in dogs and requires rest.

Examine the dog for signs of injury to the limbs, such as swelling or tenderness to touch. Determining the cause of lameness can be difficult and often requires veterinary help.

Fractures: When a fracture is simple and the bones remain straight, healing is assisted with a cast or bandage.
