Pet Household Dangers

There are more and more cases of pet household dangers that are being exposed to dangers inside and outside your home.  They are lurking in corners and cabinets.  For animal poison control don’t leave it up to your pet to keep themselves out of them.  I am listing below ten poisons that can affected your pet.

Insecticides

We all don’t want those nasty bugs, but we often put our pets at risk without knowing it.  It is understood that incidents involved is the misuse of flea and tick product, such as applying the wrong treatment to the wrong species.  Always talk to your vet before giving your pets a flea and tick control program.

Rodenticides

Rat and mouse poison are harmful for your pets.  Some baits that are used to attract those pest can contain inactive ingredients that will attract your pet as well.  Depending on the type of poison, ingestion can lead to life-threatening problems for your pet, including bleeding, seizure and kidney damage.

People Food

Foods like raisins, grapes, avocado and some citrus fruit can harm your pets.  The worst is chocolate in large amount of methylxanthines, if this is eaten it will cause vomiting, diarrhea, panting and excessive thirst, in server cases, abnormal heart rhythm, tremor and seizures.

Veterinary Medications

Medications given by your vet is intended to help your pet but sometime is misapplied or improperly dispensed by well-meaning pet owners.  Animal poison control cases that the ASPCA has seen are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, heartworm preventatives, de-wormers, antibiotics, vaccines and nutritional supplements.

People Medications

Medication in your medicine cabinets have been the number one hazard to your pet.  The ASPCA managed more than 50,000 calls involving prescription and over-the- counter drugs, like painkillers, cold medicine, antidepressants and even vitamins.  Your pet will snatch a pill off your night stand or a pill that was dropped on the floor by accident.  So it’s essential to keep your medicine away and out of reach, also check the floor to make sure you didn’t drop anything

Plants

The plants in your house can cause problems, such as azalea, rhododendron, sago palm, lilies, kalanchoe and schefflera.  Lilies are especially toxic to cats, and can cause life-threatening kidney failure even in small amounts!

Chemical

Chemical hazards are things like ethylene glycol antifreeze, paint thinner, drain cleaners and pool/spa chemicals—form a substantial danger to pets.  These can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression, respiratory difficulties and chemical burns.

Metals

Metals are things like lead, zinc and mercury.  Lead is especially pernicious, and pets are exposed to it through many sources, including consumer products, paint chips, linoleum, and lead dust produced when surfaces in older homes are scraped or sanded

Household Cleaners

We all know what the household cleaners are and how they affect humans, but take precaution to protect your pets from things such as bleaches, detergents and disinfectants.  When inhaled by your pet it can cause serious gastrointestinal distress and irritation to the respiratory tract.

Fertilizer

It may keep your grass green, but certain types of fertilizer can cause problems for outdoor cats and dogs. Prevention is really key to avoiding accidental exposure.
